Sigara Bunni

Brown Cigarette

This song is by Mahmoud El Hosseiny.

Sahab el so' dehku alaya w gharrauni.
Bad friends tricked me and put me in a bad situation.
Lafuli haaga bunni w sharrabuni.
They wrapped something brown and got me to smoke it.
Hasit ehsas gharib.
I felt strange.
Marafshi maly.
I didn't know what happened to me.
Mabaetsh arif yimini min shimali.
I didn't know my right from my left.
Donya leffi beya.
The world was spinning around me.
Ololi eh garali.
Tell me what happenend to me.

Ana sharib sigara bunni, bunni, bunni.
I smoked brown cigarette, brown, brown (meaning hashish or drugs).
Hasis in dimaghi betakulni.
I felt that my head is not fine. (literally: my head is eating me)
A'ad fi el hara basa'at, basa'at, basa'at.
I was sitting on a street (dazed).
Wil ghasil amal yina'ad.
And the laundry was dripping watter.
Wil shar'a elli waraya oddami.
And I saw the street behind me in the front.
Wil kalam 'ala tarf lisani.
And the words were on the tip of my tongue.
Bagi at kallim batlaghbat, batlaghbat.
when I start, my speach is confused, confused.

* Ya amm walla!
Oh friend, light up! (a lighter)
Ya sidi walla!
Oh sir, light up!
They lighted up!

Shript sigara tanya.
I smoked another cigarette.
Nasitni esmi fi sanya.
I forgot my name in a second.
Shript sigara tanya.
I smoked another cigarette.
Nasitni esmi.
I forgot my name.
Wisalt, wisalt
And I asked, and I asked
Wisalt 'ala bab beitna.
And I asked about the door of my home.
Aluli mish hetitna.
They told me "it's not your area".
Shaluni wa rauahuni.
They carried me and took me to my home.
Yarithum ma shrabuni.
I wish that they hadn't given the smoke.
Dawakhuni ta'buni.
They made me dizzy and tired.
repeat from *

Di akhrit el hikaya.
This is the end of the story.
Mata'meluhash ma'ya!
Don't do it again to me!
Di akhrit el hikaya.
This is the end of the story.
Don't do it again!
Sibuni aish hayati, faye lay hikaya.
Let me live my life, to be ready for the future (for any story).
Mush hashrab, mush hashrab
I won't smoke, I won't smoke
Mush hashrab bunni teeni!
I won't smoke drugs (brown) again!
Wala haraf shaklu teeni.
And I won't even know how it looks anymore.

I'm very grateful for all my friends, who helped me to translate the lyrics of this song. None of my friends is a professional Arabic-English translator: some of them are fluent in Arabic, some English and a few - my self included - have some skill in both languages. It's often quite challenging to express both the idea and the literal meaning of the lyrics in a few words, as I consider it most useful to the dancers that the translation include both these aspects.
